Overview

The complete picture before you commit.

Honest, plain-English explanation no jargon, no hard sell. We want you to understand exactly what we're recommending and why.

What it is

A smart video doorbell is a high-definition camera, microphone, speaker and motion sensor mounted at your front door linked via WiFi (or hard-wired data) to a phone app. Visitors trigger an instant notification on your phone wherever you are; you see live HD video and hold a two-way conversation as if you were home.

Who it's for

Anyone who's ever missed a delivery, wanted to vet visitors before opening the door, manages a property remotely, or simply wants a recorded log of who came to the door. Increasingly we install for elderly customers wanting to feel safer answering the door, and for businesses wanting to control reception or trade-counter access.

When you need it

If you've already had a parcel stolen from the porch, found an unfamiliar visitor's note, or felt nervous opening the door at night that's the trigger. Most doorbell installs we do follow exactly one of those events.

Why professional install matters

Battery-powered DIY doorbells suffer from short battery life, drop offline regularly, and miss visitors when the WiFi flickers. A professionally installed hard-wired doorbell with proper power and signal integrated with the rest of your security system never misses a visit and never needs charging. We install HIKVISION video doorbells linked to your existing CCTV and alarm app.

What's at stake

What happens when this gets ignored.

Stolen parcels you never see arrive

Doorstep theft has risen sharply across the North West. Without recorded video at the door, items vanish without trace.

Cold callers and rogue traders

Vetting visitors via app without opening the door is the safest way to handle uninvited callers, especially for elderly residents.

Battery doorbells that fail

Cheap DIY doorbells need charging every 1–3 months. People stop bothering. The doorbell becomes useless exactly when it matters.

Missing the delivery driver

Two-way audio means you can give delivery instructions ('leave round the back, please') even when you're miles away. No more 'sorry we missed you' cards.

Our Process

A clear, predictable process no guesswork.

Four decades of installs has taught us exactly what works. Every customer follows the same well-tested path from first call to long-term aftercare.

  1. 1Step 1

    Survey & Power Check

We check existing doorbell wiring, WiFi signal at the front door and any integration with your existing CCTV or alarm.

  2. 2Step 2

    Fixed Quote

Clear price covering doorbell, any required transformer, installation and app setup. Single visit for most installs.

  3. 3Step 3

    Hard-Wired Installation

Wherever possible we hard-wire eliminating the battery problem entirely. We install or replace transformers as needed.

  4. 4Step 4

    App Setup & Integration

App linked to every household phone, motion zones tuned, integration with CCTV/alarm app where applicable.

  5. 5Step 5

    Walkthrough & Tuning

We answer every question, fine-tune motion sensitivity to avoid false alerts, and check coverage extends across the porch and driveway.

Hard-Wired vs Battery Doorbells

Battery doorbells (Ring, Eufy battery models, Arlo) rely on internal lithium-ion batteries that need recharging every 1–3 months in real-world use typically more often in winter. Many users stop charging them and the doorbell falls out of service. Hard-wired doorbells use either an existing chime transformer or a new low-voltage transformer we install meaning permanent power, no batteries to charge, and continuous recording capability. For long-term reliability we strongly recommend hard-wired wherever the property allows.

HIKVISION Video Doorbells

We primarily install the HIKVISION DS-HD1 and DS-KB6403 doorbell ranges full 1080p or 2MP HD video, wide field of view, two-way audio, motion-triggered recording, and integration with the HIK-Connect app you may already use for the rest of your CCTV. Where you have an existing HIKVISION NVR, the doorbell records to the same NVR storage rather than a separate cloud subscription.

Power & Wiring Requirements

Most modern smart doorbells require either a 12V or 24V transformer (often replacing the original 8V mechanical chime transformer), a Cat5/Cat6 ethernet run for PoE-powered models, or both. We carry suitable transformers and PoE injectors as standard, and we'll always discuss the power solution upfront so there are no surprises during install.

WiFi vs Wired-Network Doorbells

WiFi doorbells are simpler to install but rely on consistent WiFi signal at the front door which is often the weakest WiFi spot in a house. Wired-network (PoE) doorbells use a Cat5/Cat6 cable for both power and data, eliminating WiFi reliability issues entirely. For homes with thick walls or front doors far from the router we strongly recommend wired-network installation.

Integration With Wider Security

When installed alongside HIKVISION CCTV the doorbell is treated as 'just another camera' recorded to the same NVR, viewed in the same app, included in the same motion-zone alerts. When installed alongside a Texecom alarm we can configure the alarm to suppress doorbell motion alerts during armed periods to avoid alert overload. Single unified app, single unified system.

GDPR & Doorbell Cameras

Domestic doorbell cameras that capture only your own property are exempt from GDPR. Where the doorbell field of view also captures public pavement or a neighbour's property, you have responsibilities under data protection law. We advise on signage, motion-zone configuration and storage retention to keep installs compliant particularly for HMOs, businesses and shared-driveway properties.

Question not answered here? Call 01457 321102.

How much does a smart doorbell install cost?+

Wireless video doorbells start from £125 fitted with no subscription fees. Final pricing depends on doorbell model, whether new wiring is needed and integration with existing CCTV. Quotes always fixed-price.

Will it work without my existing doorbell wiring?+

Yes if there's no existing wiring we install a new low-voltage transformer (usually in your consumer-unit cupboard) and run a discreet cable to the doorbell location.

Can I see the doorbell on my phone when I'm away?+

Yes that's the whole point. Live HD video, two-way audio and motion alerts work anywhere you have phone signal, whether you're at work or abroad.

Will visitors know they're being recorded?+

Visitors see the doorbell camera lens clearly and most recognise it. For commercial and HMO installs we provide GDPR-compliant signage as standard.

Can I integrate it with my existing alarm or CCTV?+

Yes where you already have HIKVISION CCTV or a Texecom alarm we install the doorbell into the same app and (where applicable) the same NVR storage.

How long is footage stored?+

Where the doorbell records to your existing HIKVISION NVR, footage is held alongside your other cameras (typically 30 days). Standalone doorbells use either local microSD or cloud storage depending on model.

Does it work at night?+

Yes all doorbells we install have infrared night-vision delivering clear black-and-white footage in zero light. Many also include LED illumination triggered by motion.

Can my elderly parents use it?+

Yes we set up the app on their phone and any family members' phones, walk through every function, and can even set notifications to ring on a tablet kept in the hallway for the easiest possible day-to-day use.
